Ten Essential Components for Building Successful Sustainable Communities

P. Allen Smith will discuss the crucial role that net-zero homes and sustainable communities play in reducing our carbon footprint and promoting a more eco-friendly way of life. Smith will focus on the importance of designing communities that prioritize walkability and a connection with nature while also featuring net-zero homes that generate as much energy as they consume. Smith will emphasize how net-zero homes can be built using advanced technologies and materials that promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. These homes not only benefit the environment but also save homeowners money on their energy bills.

Additionally, Smith will highlight the importance of walkable communities that prioritize pedestrian and bicycle traffic and provide easy access to natural areas like parks and green spaces. Such communities promote physical activity, a sense of community, and good health. Lew Oliver, a land planner and architectural designer, is working with Smith to create sustainable communities that are self-sustaining and eco-friendly. Together, they employ a "New Urbanism" approach to sustainable community design that prioritizes sustainability, walkability, and mixed-use zoning. Overall, Smith's presentation will emphasize the importance of building sustainable communities with net-zero homes and walkable neighborhoods that connect with nature. Working with experts like Lew Oliver, Smith is leading the way in creating a more sustainable and fulfilling way of life while benefiting the environment.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the concept of net-zero homes and their significance in promoting environmental sustainability, including how they generate as much energy as they consume.
2. Recognize the key elements of successful sustainable communities, such as walkable neighborhoods and mixed-use zoning, and grasp their positive impact on fostering a sense of community and promoting physical activity.
3. Learn about advanced technologies and materials used in building net-zero homes, gaining insights into the energy-efficient features that can significantly reduce homeowners' energy bills.
4. Appreciate the importance of a "New Urbanism" approach to sustainable community design, acknowledging its potential to create self-sustaining and eco-friendly neighborhoods that prioritize a connection with nature and promote a more fulfilling way of life.

Kicking the Lunch Bucket: Why We Need a LifeARK

We are trapped in silo'd thinking with a lunch bucket mentality. Every Day we unpack our new lunch bucket and go to work in our silos. First it was reduce energy, then IAQ, Net Zero / Zero Energy and now Carbon Intensity. The housing industry has been adapting to every increasing guidelines, regulations and requirements, all with varying degrees of merit, and each very often brought forth by one silo of the industry.

This session will unpack the lunch bucket to see what's inside. Beginning with the Two Commandments of homebuilding and The Four Principals of Modern Design, the presenters will show why and how these concepts combine to create a more holistic approach to home building, the concept of building a LifeARK.

LifeARK Explores what happens when we build all electric buildings and the power goes out for an extended period from a devastating but survivable weather event. To accomplish LifeARK, we will need to find a middle ground between Passive and Active Survivability, a concept we are defining as Sustainable Survivability.

Session covers Carbon, Zero Energy, IAQ, Survivability and More

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the importance of Water Management and Air Tightness.
  • Identify Carbon Reduction, IAQ, Occupant Comfort and Climate Resiliency strategies.
  • Define Sustainable Survivability and critical load paths.
  • Implement change by creating cost effective LifeARKs.

Building for the New Normal: Disaster-Resistant Construction

The changing climate has brought an increase in natural disasters across the United States. The types of disasters occurring in various regions are shifting as well: localities are seeing natural events previously unknown or very rare for their area. Wildfire risk has increased dramatically in regions of wildland-urban interface, flooding is occurring in areas that were traditionally safe from high waters, extreme heat events are taking place in even our northern-most states, and termite intrusion is spreading into traditionally cooler regions. The changes are rapid, while local codes can be slow to adapt.

This presentation suggests that it may be time to be proactive as builders; to build for resilience beyond code. We will provide guidance on how to assess local risks for various disaster types, along with key best practices for increasing resistance to floods, high winds, hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, winter storms, extreme heat, and pest intrusion. Finally, we will present the Building America Solution Center's disaster resistance tool, a free, contractor-focused resource for how-to guidance on building resilient homes.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how natural disasters are changing and increasing across the nation.
  • Identify resources and methods to assess your region for natural disaster risk.
  • Discover best practices for building resilient, disaster-resistant homes.
  • Learn where to find resources for guidance on disaster-resistant construction.

How to Successfully Communicate the Benefits of a High-Performance Home to Your Buyer

This program will review how builders, architects, real estate agents, and product manufacturers can help homeowners recognize the value and benefits of purchasing a high-performance, custom home. NAHB research confirms that home buyers are willing to pay more for a home if the increase in cost results in lower ongoing energy bills.* The research reveals that although 78% of buyers report being concerned about the impact building their home has on the environment, only 15% are willing to pay more for a home just because it is described as "environmentally friendly. Conversely, NAHB research shows buyers are willing to pay extra for a home if they understand it will lead to annual savings in utility costs. In fact, 57% are willing to pay $5,000 or more, on top of the price of the home, in order to save $1,000 a year in utilities.* Therefore, moving away from industry terms like Green and Sustainable, and instead explaining to buyers the tremendous financial benefit they will receive each year from owning a high-performance home, leads to greater buyer interest. This session will discuss the value proposition of designing and building high-performance custom homes for the architect, the custom builder, and the design/build firm. It will also review best practices for product manufacturers looking to sell into this market – and how all these built-environment professionals can work with the real estate agents to better communicate the value of high-performance homes to their buyers.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the overall benefits of designing custom homes with high-performance products and build processes.
  • Demonstrate the economic benefits of specific high-performance products (like Insulated Concrete Forms or ICFs) in maximizing project ROI.
  • Learn to effectively communicate the value of owning a high-performance home to home buyers in a way that will get them onboard.
  • Learn to effectively communicate the role air quality and water management play in an owner's enjoyment of their high-performance home.
